Roman blinds are an obvious answer to to the well known phrase: "what shall I do with a dormer window?" But in a light starved room, even romans can keep out too much light.  Take a look at the pictures on this site and you will see Fabric Covered Shutters.  These are wooden frames, made exactly to fit your window, then upholstered in the fabric of your choice. When shut, they can give a very good blackout...when open, the room will be flooded with light.
